The empire had fallen apart. East and West went their own ways. On to the scene cam Justinian, a man with a plan and an iron fist to see it through. He was emperor from 527 to 565. With his general Belisarius he made the imperial boundaries formidable, brought Africa back into the empire and extended imperial power to the eastern end of the Black Sea. He also showed serious capability in the revision of the Roman law code.
And is he remembered for these things? No. But he is remembered for something better. It was he who brought about the design and cnstruction of one of the most beautiful buildings in the world – Hagia Sophia. It is with us today. It has had a mixed history but it is still an inspiration.
And this makes us think. Does a building affect what goes on in it? Were the builders offering a prayer in their work of construction? How much are we in debt to or showing generosity to subsequent generations?
Buildings make statements. A great building, a cathedral or palace, proclaims its identity and the status of the owner or user. An insignificant building carries an altogether different message.
Justinian backed the Christian faith. But he was a tyrant and a flawed individual. We should not emulate his cruelty or ruthlessness. But we must thank him for putting us in possession of a wonderful Byzantine building that has survived for 1500 years.
BANBURY POETRY
Banbury parish church (a handsome Georgian building) is moving into poetry. Its chaplain for the arts, Sarah Bourne, offers a useful slogan: ‘Want to write better poetry? Start reading.’ Along with quotations from English poets. The church belongs to the inclusive network.
LERWICK THIRTY
Thirty worshippers attended a service a St Magnus Episcopal Church, Lerwick, Shetland, a visitor noticed when he was there in 2021. There was a warm welcome, a seven-minute sermon and Fair Trade coffee at the end.
