Christ Church, Staines
Yesterday was Manna Sunday at Christ Church, Staines. See Exodus 16. Instead of a conventional Robert Hawker style harvest festival a gallery band made its debut with a programme of traditional hymns in folk style. Boxes were placed outside the 1962 church for tinned food etc. to comply with regulations.
They call it killing two birds with one stone. The treasurer, Paul Cheetham, of All Saints, Mickleover parish church, Derbyshire reports in the parish magazine edited by James Bowles that the church is running a monthly deficit of approaching £500. The church is installing a new floor, servery and toilets and is raising money for these works and for the requisite chairs by selling its pews. The amount so far donated towards the refurbishment is £5,700.
Ockbrook parish church, Derbyshire is also refurbishing its building. An £800,000 scheme includes new heating, toilets and the replacement of pews by chairs.
Yesterday St James’s, Carlisle, premiered its on-line messy church at 4 p.m. Once a month the church offers a leisurely two-course lunch at £3.50.
Newburn, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, parish church looks back to two fires. In 2006 damage required a £2.6m repair job. In 1067 CE a wooden church was destroyed. Violence was rife in those days. Around that time one Copsi was found murdered outside the church door. Those intending to attend a service nowadays are told: ‘You don’t need to dress smart, or be quiet or even be good. Just come as you are.’
Pinner parish church is undergoing a thorough refurbishment – new roof, l.e.d. lighting etc. ‘We have been working for the last nine years to make necessary restoration to both inside and out,’ says the Vicar, Paul Hullyer. In the September magazine the editor, Audrey Taylor, notes that Sunday teas – new style – are being resumed.
